Training review ‘OSCP’

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4 of 5 stars)

I recently gave it a try and successfully conducted my OSCP exam. 🎉

I read the provided OSCP documents first and afterwards went for the labs. The course contains a wealth of information. There are tools and topics covered in the course that were new to me. I enjoyed reading all the documents, the quality is good and the content is interesting!

After starting the labs (around 20/75 labs done at that time), there was a bigger incident at my employer, causing many overhours and a huge motiviation decrease to sit in front of the computer. Luckily my motivation came back some weeks ago and I started doing labs after work. I felt confident after doing around 40 labs to go for the exam.

In the exam I “just” scored 70 of 100 points in around 15 hours. After 15 hours I felt tired, ensured that I documented everything correctly and ended the exam. The report on the day after the exam took another few hours. I got feedback after around 24 hours that I passed the exam in the portal.

The labs are interesting, but nothing special compared to Hack the Box or VulnHub. Some labs are artificially set up and not realistic in my point of view. It is great to have the lab environment accessible so you can focus on hacking, instead of setting up and maintaining your own labs.

The course is great but also very pricey. I would not pay privately for the course, because the value for the money does not convince me. If you want to go for the course for the certification, it maybe worth the money, depending on your goals (career boost etc.) and your determination. The exam taking 24 hours was not a pleasant experience, because you cannot work concentrated for 24 hours straight. Additionally the targets contain rabbit holes that makes you waste time and put even more stress on you.

Overall doing the OSCP was a nice experience with the exception of the exam.
