Book review ‘Learn PowerShell in a Month of Lunches, Fourth Edition’

Rating: ★★★★★ (5 of 5 stars)

I preordered ‘Learn PowerShell in a Month of Lunches, Fourth Edition‘and it was worth waiting for. It is the first edition that covers the cross platform capabilities of PowerShell and not only PowerShell for Windows. It means that the knowledge and skills that you gain by reading this book aren´t (mostly) limited to the Windows platform! My intention to get better at PowerShell was mainly caused by CrowdStrike “Real-Time-Response” (RTR) - which is also working via Powershell and crucial for DFIR capabilities.

The setup of other platforms and limitations of the shown techniques to specific platform are mentioned in every chapter. In a lot of other books this setup is super bloated with large screenshots and very excessive descriptions on how to do it - luckily this is not the case for this book!

The book is written in a entertaining and educational manner. I really liked the exercises and the solutions at the end of each chapter. The examples are always lightweight and focus on the current chapter. The exercises don´t require much and can basically be done while reading! It feels great having small senses of achievement while consolidating the knowledge of the chapter. Chapeau!

Don´t expect to be a PowerShell expert after reading the 360 pages. There are several references previous “Learn Powershell in a Month of Lunches” editions or to other books when it comes to topics that aren´t dealt with in depth. But the book gives you everything at hand to give it a try on your own!

If you have written some PowerShell scripts and want to better understand why it works or just want to get an introduction into PowerShell, this is the book for you!
